Property Description
Bissex Plantation is a reminder of a grand time when sugar ruled the world and Barbados was the centre jewel of the British Royal Crown. Over 300 years of history are embedded in the walls and grounds of Bissex Plantation which was once the largest plantation on the island. This property is on a beautifully elevated location commanding panoramic views of the rugged East Coast and the horizon beond the Atlantic Ocean. Bissex Plantation, whilst soliciting a quiet, removed-from-it-all feeling, is still only 25 minutes away from Speightstown and all the amenities therein.
A gravel drive leads up to the main house which has two separate entrances, one at the rear of the home, and the other through a pathway of lush foliage leading onto the wrap-around patio at the front of the house. The beautiful croquet lawn sweeps out from the house towards the horizon with a sprawling Flamboyant tree at its centre. At the very end of the croquet lawn is a little bench perfect for watching the Caribbean sunrise, or enjoying a cup of afternoon tea in the cool sea breeze.
The main house is surrounded by immaculate gardens featuring a wide variety of local flora and fauna amidst the well-established trees. A coconut grove at the southern boundary, a wooded area to the north and an abundance of fruit trees throughout provide a lush, uniquely Caribbean feel. The property is encased at each boundary with a substantial guard wall at the western boundary, along the main road, ensuring utmost safety and privacy.
The main house features living space on 2 levels. The lower level is comprised of both formal and informal living and dining rooms, library, powder room, and a substantially equipped kitchen and scullery. There is also a wrap-around patio on three sides of the lower level providing ample outdoor living, dining and entertaining space. A traditional dark mahogany staircase leads to the first floor which opens out into a sitting room with beautiful views of the surrounding gardens. The first floor also includes four spacious bedroom suites, including a master suite, the grandeur of which is unparalleled. The north-eastern bedroom has a particularly unique feature with a private entrance ascending from a garden courtyard and a spiral staircase leading to the parapet roof with the most unbelievable views of the coast and the countryside.
There is an abundance of definitive features which are remnants of Bissex Plantation's splendid history, including coral stone walls, traditional shuttered sash windows, and wooden floors. However, over the years a few modern conveniences have been added, such as the splendid pool and gazebo to the east of the main house, accessible via a garden path, which allow for stunning views of both the countryside and the coastline.
The self-contained pool house provides for extra lodging with a sizeable bedroom suite and kitchen. There is also another cottage which is currently being used as an office but would be very easily transformed into a 2 or 3 bedroom cottage. Yet another outbuilding provides for staff lodging and is comprised of one bedroom, bathroom sitting room, laundry facility, and ample storage.
Bissex Plantation is a symbol of the grand past this island enjoyed during the height of the sugar trade hundreds of years ago. So few of the great houses of the original plantations still stand today which makes Bissex particularly unique. The combination of history, modern conveniences, splendid views, and lush landscaping makes Bissex Plantation an amazing property, the likes of which are not seen but once in a lifetime.
